Lightning visit to Maldon

Sunday is the day for taking a trip in the car. A new tradition which we've only done once - so far. We are trying to get Sam used to being in the car, so that when it's time to go to Stockport at Christmas, he won't get too upset. That's the theory...

So, in the spirit of exploration, we went somewhere we have never been before; Maldon in Essex. It's a nice little town on the coast of the North Sea, with views over the Blackwater estuary.

It took us an hour and a quarter to get there (we went the scenic route via Southminster, which was a disappointment). Sam slept most of the way, which was encouraging. As we arrived in Maldon, and parked up at Promenade Park we got out and took a stroll down to the waterfront.

It was a cold, damp day and I think it was just too chilly for Sam. Stupidly, we forgot to take a spare blanket for him, and just his clothes and jacket was not enough, even though he was in the sling. We lasted about 5 minutes before the crying started and we just about had time to grab a chip butty and run back to the car. We fed Sam and thawed him out again before we took off and toured Maldon town - in the car.

Maldon is a nice little town, with some interesting nooks and corners. The old town has character and the waterfront looked authentic and un-developed. Sadly, the town does not have a train station, but maybe that's why it has kept its character. They also do a fine line in chip butties.

As for Sam, he slept for most of the journey back, but he also noticed the window and the scenery passing by. It's a positive sign that he did not cry in the car, only outside in the cold. He seems to like being in the car seat, but not for too long.

Next week it's Angela's turn to choose the destination.

it sounds as if Maldon might be a place to visit on the summer hols. Especially if they do good chip butties. Is the bread thick or thin and is it butter or marge???????????? Makes all the difference.

nice floury baps, ketchup, no butter.

Apparently the estuary mud starts to pong in the summer. We're going back to check how bad it gets.
